‘Without Remorse’ — Review
Michael B. Jordan is a lethal weapon driven by tragedy
Barry’s Bites Rating = 7.8/10
At face value, this is a classic Tom Clancy movie. There is a plethora of top-notch action sequences and close combat to keep the audience entertained. However, this movie brings more grit, by way of tragedy, than we are used to seeing in Clancy movies. This movie feels more like John Krasinski's ‘Jack Ryan’ and less like Chris Pine's ‘Jack Ryan’. Through the lens of the age-old saga of the U.S vs. Russia, we are taken on a journey that strives to dive deeper into its character's motives.
Michael B. Jordan has always been a great action movie star. He’s shown his abilities through movies such as ‘The Black Panther’, ‘Creed’, and ‘Fantastic Four’. He deserved this role, playing John Clark, as a chance to showcase all of his abilities. Clark is a lethal weapon but also reveals his human side at certain points. The audience is able to see him tactically take down his enemies on the battlefield like he is a man-made lethal weapon. Then he becomes a dotting husband outside of combat. However, when his enemies take away everything that made him human, all they’re left with is the lethal weapon side of Clark. So that’s what they end up facing for the majority of this movie.
As the transformation of Clark’s character happens, the movie begins to heat up. As I said, Clark is a human lethal weapon. This means that his path towards retribution is an exciting one to watch. This movie keeps its pace the entire time with a rise of action while retaining most of its plot moving points. This culminates in a rising tension as the audience is along for the ride to unravel the truth…
What does it lack?
Besides the action scenes bringing it to life, it feels as though it stalls at some points. One cause of the drag on the movie’s ascension is the amount of plot that was crammed into a short period of time. While it’s easy to enjoy the action, the plot feels rushed at points. Instead of establishing a compelling back story, the movie seems pressed for time and predictable when it should be methodical. All of the pivotal plot scenes seem to serve the action sequences. It would’ve served the story better for this to be drawn out into a mini-series versus a movie. However, it’s still a very enjoyable movie that creates an attention-grabbing experience for the audience.
