‘Fatherhood’ is not your typical Kevin Hart Movie. Instead of taking on a role that would utilize his hilarious acting style. This movie calls for Kevin Hart to lean into his emotions more than any other role he’s previously untaken.

There is a mix of comedic style in parts; however, it leans heavily into the emotional side of his character's life. It might have been considered a risk for Hart; however, it turned out as an exceptional movie in his portfolio. It has helped to define him as a more dynamic actor, aside from comedic movies.

Premise

With a baby on the way, Matt Logelin (played by Kevin Hart), despite being a well-intentioned father-to-be, has a questionable grasp on responsibility. One example the movie constantly presents is that as his baby's arrival is imminent, he has yet to construct the crib.

When his wife tragically dies after childbirth from a pulmonary embolism just a day after giving childbirth, he finds himself in a position few can imagine. Matt must simultaneously figure out how to be a grieving husband and a single father. All the while facing doubts about his ability to raise a child from all sides, including himself, his in-laws, and his friends.

‘Fatherhood’ stands in stark contrast to most of Kevin Hart’s previous work. Instead of alleviating the audience's emotions with laughter, it strives to take a different route. The majority of the movie is emotional as it tackles a serious subject matter, grief in conjunction with single fatherhood.

It presents Matt with one of the most difficult situations anyone can experience in life. Through his tragedy and struggle, a beautiful story arises. One that will tug at the audience's heartstrings while presenting beautiful moments that the audience can empathize with.

Tragedy takes over a large portion of the movie as Matt struggles to raise a child and deal with grief. It is through this emotional turmoil that the movie attempts to bring out its shining moments.

Through the theme of tragedy, the movie sets a tone for the audience. This sets in motion a strained viewing experience—one where the line is blurred between struggle and hope.

Through these moments of adversity, the movie allows the audience to see Matt struggle and sometimes flail as a single parent. However, he manages through them as they enable him to understand himself better and decipher being a parent. It’s what most imagine parenthood as being, except he’s figuring it out all by himself.

What is the decision I’m making and who is the decision best for? I don’t know!
— Matt Logelin

Eventually, these moments of distress are used to liberate more heartwarming scenes, where the reward for the character and the audience is greater.

Kevin Hart perfectly executes the character of Matt Logelin. It’s not easy to achieve, yet he displays a complicated yet determined character throughout the movie. His performances leave an impact on the audience and ushers in the more uplifting scenes.

‘Fatherhood’ is a stand-out performance for Kevin Hart. One that he probably did not believe he had in his wheelhouse 5 or 10 years prior. If you’re someone who has found themselves in a rut or needs an uplifting break from life, check out the trailer for ‘Fatherhood’ below.
