Not only is Natasha Romanoff's first standalone film a spectacle, but it’s also a great first movie to see in theaters after the pandemic. The graphics and sound are delightful to feel in person on the big screen. Take a trip through this spoiler-free review to see what could await you if you see this movie.

The Premise

Taking place after the events of ‘Captain America: Civil War (2016). Natasha Romanoff (aka the Black Widow), played by Scarlett Johansen, must face the dark past she left behind to combat a dangerous conspiracy. As she is chased by a force that will do anything to bring her down, Natasha must simultaneously deal with her spy history, the broken relationships, and the death left in her ledger before she soared to become an Avenger.

Directed by Cate Shortland and with a screenplay by Eric Pearson, this is a movie you won’t want to miss out on seeing.

Spoiler-Free Review: Barry’s Bites Rating = 8.6

As with any Marvel movie, you enter with certain expectations. Yes, there are going to be some great fight scenes and some playful banter between the characters. However, in the end, you never really know how it’s going to play out.

Romanoff’s standalone film has been a long time coming. We’ve gotten glimpses of her past throughout the Marvel films but never really knew its true depth. It’s been revealed that her ledger is full of blood but who was directing her, where was she really from or born, and what all did she leave behind in her past? Suffice to say, the boiling point has been breached and Marvel studios finally realized that the fans were aching for answers.

Enter the ‘Black Widow’ movie, releasing on July 9th, 2021. It’s a culmination of so many aspects that make a classic Marvel movie. The combat scenes feature many of Widow's typical moves, with the added effects of awesome CGI, make it a heart-pumping action movie. The filmmakers keep the audience engaged to the point that it makes a 2-hour movie feel much shorter. It’s not only filled with action but has a soul too. As she reunites with people from her past, we see sides of Romanoff’s character that we haven’t in past movies.

Black Widows' sister, Yelena Belova, who we’re introduced to in the trailer, is played exceptionally well by Florence Pugh. She gives off the perfect little sister vibes throughout the film as you grow to love her character. The cast is rounded out by Rachel Weisz and David Harbour, who both pull off their characters in a tasteful way.

All in all ‘Black Widow’ brings back the elements that made the Marvel movies appreciable, culminating in the ‘Avengers: Endgame’. It will be very interesting to see what direction the Marvel universe heads with the characters introduced in this film as well as the planned phase 4 releases.

If you’re someone who has been wanting to get back into a theater or someone who appreciates the Marvel universe, check out the trailer below!
